Graduated from the Moscow Choreographic School, 1906.
Dancer with the Bolshoi Theatre. Appeared in Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, 1909. Left the Bolshoi Theatre in 1912 and appeared as the partner of Anna Pavlova in London and the USA. Returned to the Bolshoi Theatre in 1914.
After the October Revolution 1917, worked as a choreographer. Produced, and appeared as leading dancer in, Narlsis by Cherepnin at the Akvarium Theatre, 1918. Emigrated. With Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, 1919-1921.
Dancer and choreographer with Pavlova’s company, 1921-1928, and with the Chicago Ballet Company, 1929-1941. Choreographer at the Metropolitan Opera, 1941-1945. Retired from the stage, 1945.
Founded a ballet school in New Buffalo where he taught till his death.
