(In Shakespeare's earliest tragedy, Titus Andronicus swear...)
In Shakespeare's earliest tragedy, Titus Andronicus swears to his speechless daughter that he will "wrest an alphabet" from her every gesture. The same task is central for Shakespeare, his characters, and his audience. For what we see in a Shakespearean tragedy is not only man speaking but man trying to speak, to create a language that can "denote his truly". Lawrence Danson studies the four major tragedies - Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, King Lear - as well as Julius Caesar, Titus Andronicus, Troilus and Cressida, and Coriolanus to demonstrate that the tragedies are not only written in words but are also written about words and about the difficulties involved in their characters' search for true and adequate modes of expression. This expression, once achieved, is the formal shape of each completed play and, in the world of tragedy, it requires an ultimate sacrifice on the part of the hero.
