Began in wholesale grocery business, Charlotte, 1869. An organizer, 1874, and for many years director, Commercial National Bank, Charlotte. Received from father, 1873, one-fifth interest in Alamance and Carolina Cotton Mills and became actively identified with the business.
Built with brother, L. Banks, the Belmont Cotton Mills. Organized and built the E. M. Holt Plaid Mills, Burlington, North Carolina, 1883. With others purchased the Altamahaw Cotton Mills, 1884 (now the Holt, Grant and Holt Cotton Manufacturing Company), the Lafayette (now the Aurora) Cotton Mills, and the Hiawatha (now the Gem) Cotton Mills.
An incorporator and director Durham & Southern Railway Company, and officer or member of many corporations. Senior member Lawrence S. Holt & Sons. Said to be the first manufacturer in the South, voluntarily to shorten the hours of labor, which he did in 1886 and 1902.
