D, 61st Illinois Infantry, January 7, 1862, and advanced to 1st sergeant. Reenlisted in same regiment, at Little Rock, Arkansas, February 1, 1864, as veterinary volunteer. Second in command Lieutenant, July 18, 1865.
First lieutenant, August 21, 1865. Honorary mustered out, September 8, 1865. Participated in Battle of Shiloh, siege of Vicksburg, and many minor engagements.
Began practice at Erie, Kansas, 1868. Member Kansas House of Representatives, 1876. Judge 7th Judicial District of Kansas, 6 terms, 1884-1907 (thrice elected without opposition).
Resigned; 1st deputy commissioner pensions by appointment of President Taft, 1909-1913.
