A year later she earned her Master of Science degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Genetics in 1959 from Columbia University. Also in 1989, Lee was given an honorary Doctor of Science from the City University of New York.
Ehrman began her career as a member of faculty at Barnard College in 1956 and had held it for two years. In 1959, she became a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Columbia University, where she served until 1961. In 1970 Lee became a founding faculty member at Purchase College of State University of New York. Also since 1995 she has been the Distinguished Professor at the same college. In 1981, Ehrman was a visiting distinguished professor at the University of Miami and a visiting lecturer at the University of Puerto Rico in 1987.
Ehrman is a member of the American Association of University Women, American Society of Naturalists (president 1990), Behavior Genetics Association (president 1978), Society for Study of Evolution, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.
In 1955, Lee Ehrman married Richard Ehrman. They have two children.
