Newman got her Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University in 1993 and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2006.
Her memoir about Alaska, Still Points North was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle"s John Leonard First Book Prize.
