Leland Wells Pollock was born on April 3, 1943, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States.
Pollock earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Bates College in 1964. He received his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from University of New Hampshire, in 1966 and 1969 respectively.
Pollock began his career at Drew University, working there as an assistant professor from 1972 till 1979. For 6 years from that year, he held the position of an associate professor, becoming a professor of biology in 1985. He was also a member of core faculty of Shoals Marine Laboratory, from 1974 till 1983. Additionally, Pollock served as a teacher for biology laboratories and research projects at New Jersey Governor's School in the Sciences, located at Drew University, for 15 years from 1984.
Pollock has conducted researches on the taxonomy and ecology of marine Tardigrada, as well as researches on the ecology and natural history of marine invertebrates of the northeastern United States. He is a contributor to books and to scientific journals. His own books include A Practical Guide to the Marine Animals of Northeastern North America, published in 1998, and Marine Flora and Fauna of the Northeastern United States: Tardigrada.
