John H. Sanders was born on September 3, 1941, in Saint Louis, Missouri, United States. He is a son of John H. Sanders, a florist, and Nancy (Gayler) Sanders.
Sanders received Bachelor of Arts degree from the Dartmouth College in 1963. Ten years later he earned his Master of Science degree from the University of Kentucky. That same year he obtained his doctor's degree from the University of Minnesota.
Sanders worked at Regional Development Office of the corporation Tennessee Valley Authority in 1967. For three years from 1973 he held the position of a Ford Foundation visiting professor at the Federal University of Ceara. After that Sanders moved to the International Center for Tropical Agriculture in Colombia, serving as an agricultural economist in Bean Program for 5 years from 1976.
Sanders then was appointed to the Purdue University, beginning as an associate professor. He has been serving as a professor of agricultural economics there from 1981. He held the position of a project coordinator at the University of Evora in Portugal, from 1981 till 1983. Sanders worked as a technical coordinator of Purdue Farming Systems Project in Burkina Faso for 2 years from 1983. Since 1983, Sanders has been travelling to Africa regularly, working principally in the Sahelian countries, Sudan, and other semiarid regions of sub-Saharan Africa. From 1985 he served as a director of International Sorghum and Millet Collaborative Research Support Program (INTSORMIL CRSP) Project in Burkina Faso, Niger, Sudan and Honduras. Sanders worked also on the board for International Food and Agricultural Development, as well as a member of Task Force on Environment and Natural Resources. Additionally, he was a panel member of the Sustainability in International Agricultural Development Programs.
From 1983 till 2016 Sanders has made over 125 trips to Sub-Saharan Africa concentrating his activities in West Africa. Currently, Sanders is collaborating in a Purdue project to identify some key agricultural activities and support services for the frontier of Colombia. He has over 100 professional publications in journals and book chapters, including Agricultural Economics, Science, Technology, and Development, Quarterly Journal of International Agriculture, Economic Development and Cultural Change, Land Use Policy, and World Development and Journal of Production Agriculture.
Sanders is a member of the International Association of Agricultural Economists and the American Association of Agricultural Economists.
Sanders married Jacqueline Brown on July 1, 1967, but the marriage ended in divorce in September 1989. Sanders has 2 children - John H. and Nicole.
