Leland Jan Woodson was born in 1942 in Detroit, Michigan, United States.
He studied at Eastern Michigan University from 1960 to 1965, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. He later completed a Master’s degree in 1972 and a second Master’s degree in 1973 at Eastern Michigan University. He also pursued graduate studies at St. John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Woodson served as a captain in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969, including service in Vietnam. Following his military service, he began a long academic career in psychology, working in a department of psychology from 1972 to 2007, where he contributed to teaching and academic development over a span of 35 years.
In addition to his academic work, he was active in the financial sector as a market analyst specializing in commodity futures markets from 1981 to 1986.
He also served as director of Vietnam Veterans in Canada, British Columbia, from 1990 to 1991, supporting veteran-related initiatives.
Woodson became a licensed psychologist in British Columbia and was a retired member of the College of Psychologists of British Columbia. He was also associated with the Rational Emotive Therapy Institute of New York.
