Educated in Boston; began drawing at Pennsylvania Academy Fine Arts, Philadelphia, 1854. Went to Europe, 1858. Studied at Royal Academy, Munich, 3½ years, and at École des Beaux Arts, Paris, 2½ years.
Professor in charge of schools of National Academy Design, 1870-1890. Among his best known pictures are The Pick of the Orchard. Ingratitude; Left in Charge.
