At the age of sixteen he moved with his family to Frankfort, and after beginning work as draftsman in the office of S. P. Saxe, was employed for two years (1891-93) by the firm of Palliser & Palliser before starting practice for himself.
During his long professional career in Frankfort Mr. Oberwarth carried on a large and successful practice. Among the important commissions awarded him was the King’s Daughters Hospital, 1904; Southern Presbyterian Church, 1900 Franklin County Court House, 1906; Y.M.C.A. Building and the Elks Club; First Christian Church; the Frankfort Hotel; State Institute for the Feeble Minded; State College for Negroes; Stewart Home Training School; Grade and High Schools for colored children, and various other buildings in the city and environs. He was also associated with Frank L. Packard Columbus, Ohio, architect, on the Capital Hotel at Frankfort, built in 1924.
During the mid-1920's he took his two sons into partnership under the firm name of Leo L. Oberwarth & Sons, and following his decease C. Julian Oberwarth (F.A.I.A.) carried on practice under his own name in the firm’s offices at 301 Second Street, Frankfort.
Mr. Oberwarth was elected to the Kentucky Chapter, A.I.A. in 1916 and continued to participate actively in Chapter affairs the rest of his life.
