Ansel Ives; 8 children including Leonard. Ordained pastor, Newbury (now West Newbury), Massachusetts, 1798. Became mediator between Hopkinsians (extreme Calvinists) and Old Calvinists.
Contributor to Hopkinsian Massachusetts Missionary Magazine, 1803, Old Calvinist Panoplist, 1805, his efforts led to consolidation of the 2 publications. Responsible for union of Hopkinsian Massachusetts Missionary Society (1799) and Old Calvinist Massachusetts General Association (1803). 1st professor theology Andover (Massachusetts) Theological Seminary, 1808-1846.
Participated in “Wood’n Ware Controversy,” 1820-1822. A founder American Board Commissioners for Foreign Missions, 1810, member governing committee, 1819-1844. A founder American Tract Society, 1814.
