Taran was born on February 22, 1933 in Galarza, Argentina; the son of Miguel and Liuba Taran. He came to the United States in 1958 and naturalized in 1976.

Taran was born on February 22, 1933 in Galarza, Argentina; the son of Miguel and Liuba Taran. He came to the United States in 1958 and naturalized in 1976.
Taran received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Classics from Princeton University in 1962.
Taran began his career as a junior fellow at the Institute of Research in Humanities at the University of Wisconsin in 1962. A year later he took the same position at the Center for Hellenic Studies. Then in 1964, Leonardo became an assistant professor of classics at the University of California.
Also in 1967, he held the position of a member of the faculty of the classics department at Columbia University. In 1971, Taran was a professor in Greek and Latin and Jay professor of Greek and Latin in 1987 at the same university. In addition, Leonardo worked as a chairman of the classics department at that university from 1976 to 1979. Since 2004 he has been a professor emeritus at Columbia University.

2012Taran is a member of the American Philological Association, Classical Association of Atlantic States, Ancient Greek Philosophy Society, Association of Guillaume Bude. Also he has been a member of managing committee at American School of Classical Studies, since 1976.
On December 10, 1971 Leonardo Taran married Judit Sofia Lida. They have a son.
