He worked as a mechanic at the station Polotsk, wagon keeper, instructor of the wagon depot. At the beginning of the war he participated in the evacuation of the equipment.

Background

Leonid Kornev was born in 1915 in the village of Spas-Sloboda (now within the city of Polotsk).

He died of his wounds in October 20, 1944. He was buried in a mass grave near the village

Stavinocha in Poland. Hero of the Soviet Union was conferred in March, 1945. L.S. Kornev was also

awarded the Order of Lenin and two Orders of the Red Star.

Career

He went to the front in March 1942. In 1943 he graduated from the Military Infantry School and became the deputy battalion commander for political affairs of the 130th Guards Rifle Regiment 44th Guards Rifle Division, 105th Rifle Corps of the 65th Army of the 1st Belorussian Front. L.S. Kornev also participated in the liberation of Belarus

and Poland. And in September 5, 1944 he distinguished himself, when a group of men in Poland seized a bridgehead, repeatedly repulsed enemy attacks and being wounded from a fight he didn't leave the battlefield.
