During World War 1 graduate ensigns’ school. 1922 graduate Red Army Military Academy.
Fought in World War 1. From 1918 in Red Army. 1918-1920 platoon commander, intelligence chief, then chief of staff of a brigade.
Regt commander, then chief of staff of a division Fought in Civil War on Northern, Eastern and Southern Fronts. From 1922 commanded battalion, regt, then cavalry division
1936-1937 commanded Proletarian Division in Moscow, then 5th Infantry Corps in Belorussian Military district, 1937 commander, Centr Asian Military district. 1938 deputy commander, Moscow Military district. 1938 expelled from Communist Party, discharged from Red Army and arrested by People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs.
Released after a while and 1939 readmitted to Communist Party. 1940 reinstated in Red Army. 1940-1941 commander, 63rd Infantry Corps.
Fought in defense of the Dnieper, June 1941 his corps launched a counter-attack which liberated Rogachev and Zhlobin.
