Background
Leonid Nikolaevich Andreev was born in a family of a surveyor. His father was Nikolaj Ivanovich Andreev (1847—1889) and his mother was Anastasia Nikolevna Andreeva (1851—1920). He also had three brothers and two sisters.

Leonid Andreev spent his childhood and adolescence living in his parent's house in Orlov. They were poor and Leonid Andreev wrote about his childhood and poverty in some of his works.
During his last year at Orlov Male Gymnasium he started reading a lot of books on philosophy, sociology, deontology and psychology. He was looking for answers and couldn't find them anywhere. In May of 1889 he decided to "tempt fate" and lay down on rails under the passing train.
In 1891 he enrolled at the Saint Petersburg University but was expelled in 1893 for not paying the tuition fee. In the same year Leonid Andreev enrolled at the Moscow University.
In 1892 and 1894 Leonid Nikolaevich Andreev suffered from depression and attempted suicide.
After he got rid of his pessimistic views he joined the Orlov Student Zemlyachestvo and that was the first time he draw attention of the Police Department.
From 1895 to 1896 Leonid Andreev wrote stories in "Orlovsk Vesti" and also custom-made portraits. In 1913 exhibited his works at "Exhibition of independent artists" in Saint Petersburg.
Leonid Andreev's political views were formed under the influence of Nikolaj Konstantinovich Mihajlovskij's works and values of revolutionary populism.
Physical Characteristics: After suicide attempts he sufferd from a chronic heart condition.
