In his early career he was a hospital official. In 1958 he was elected alternate to Socialist deputy Justin Catayée, and he succeeded as full deputy when Catayée died in an accident in I960. He was reelected in 1962 but was defeated by a Gaullist in 1967. In 1971 he was named to the French Senate and served until 1978. Between 1970 and 1973 he also was president of the General Council of French Guiana.
