Leroy Phillips was an American criminal defense attorney and author. He is particularly known for his work "Contempt of Court: The Turn-of-the-Century Lynching That Launched 100 Years of Federalism".

Leroy Phillips was born on the 20th of February, 1935 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States, the oldest of seven children of Leroy Phillips, Sr. and Ruby Humphreys Phillips.

Education

Leroy Phillips attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where he received a Bachelor of Laws in 1960.

Career

Leroy began practicing law in Chattanooga at Phillips & Caputo as a trial attorney. He practiced law for 44 years and retired in December 2005. He was admitted to the practice of law in the State Courts of Tennessee, the United States Federal Courts including the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

With Mark Curriden Leroy wrote "Contempt of Court: The Turn-of-the-Century Lynching That Launched 100 Years of Federalism" in 1999.
