Ordained an Anglican minister in 1934, Stradling served as a curate of the Anglican church in London from 1933 to 1938. After seven years as vicar of Anglican churches in London, he ventured to Tanzania as bishop. Beginning in 1952, he served nine years as bishop of Anglican churches in Tanganyika (present-day Tanzania). In 1961 when the Bishop of Johannesburg, Ambrose Reeves, was deported in part for his denunciation of apartheid, Stradling was selected as his replacement. Stradling also did not support apartheid but suggested that members of his congregation take a lawful approach to work for change. He retired from the post in 1974 and pursued various writing projects. While in Africa Leslie became fluent in Swahili and could preach sermons in the language. Among his books are A Bishop at Prayer, Prayers of Love, Prayers of Faith, Praying Now, Praying the Psalms, A Bishop on Safari, Show Me Your Ways, and The Acts through Modern Eyes.
Leslie Stradling was a member of the City and Civil Service.
