He was honored with the award on May 10, 1865. Hack was born in Cadwell, New New York He joined the Army from Salisbury, Vermont in August 1861, and mustered out with his regiment in June 1865.
Hack was later buried in Ticonderoga, New New York
Hack received his country"s highest award for bravery during combat, the Medal of Honor. Hack"s medal was won for his actions at the Third Battle of St. Petersburg in Virginia, where he captured the flag of the Confederate 23rd Tennessee Infantry on April 2, 1865. The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Lester Goodel Hack, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 2 April 1865, while serving with Company F, 5th Vermont Infantry, in action at St. Petersburg, Virginia, for capture of flag of 23d Tennessee Infantry (Confederate States of America) with several of the enemy.
