Pupil of N. Lysenko, and at the N. Lysenko School of Musical Drama, 1903-1905. Pupil of S. Korotkevich (later of G. Khodorovskii). Graduated from the Conservatory and University (Faculty of Law), 1916.
Trained at the N. Tutkovskii Music School. On graduating from university, 1907, entered the school of the Russkoe Muzykalnoe Obshchestvo. After the foundation of the Kiev Conservatory, 1913, studied composition under R. Glier.
Began composing from 1908-1909. Spent 2 years in the army, on the Riga front. Worked in Priluki as a piano soloist and accompanist.
Taught at the Lysenko Musical Drama Institute, Kiev, from 1924. Member of the board of the Union of Composers of the Ukrainian SSR from 1932. Chairman, 1944-1948. Taught at the Conservatory from 1933.
Professor of Composition and History of Music at the Tashkent Conservatory from 1935. Returned to musical activities in Kiev. Doctor of the history of art, 1941.
Member of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences from 1957. Composed in the classical tradition.
