(Jack Spicer, unlike his contemporaries Allen Ginsberg, Ja...)
Jack Spicer, unlike his contemporaries Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and Gary Snyder, was a poet who disdained publishing and relished his role as a social outcast. He died in 1965 virtually unrecognized, yet in the following years his work and thought have attracted and intrigued an international audience. Now this comprehensive biography gives a pivotal poet his due. Based on interviews with scores of Spicer's contemporaries, Poet Be Like God details the most intimate aspects of Spicer's life-his family, his friends, his lovers-illuminating not only the man but also many of his poems.

Lewis Ellingham was born on February 27, 1933 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, United States, into the family of M. Miller and Margery (Hyman) Ellingham.
Lewis attended University of California in Berkeley.
Lewis Ellingham, born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, migrated to San Francisco, having tasted bohemian life in Chicago and New York. He settled in North Beach, in a world centered in bars, odd jobs and the group of poets and painters dominated by Jack Spicer. Lewis Ellingham has worked, variously, as a writer, editor and genealogist.
It would remain the same cultural world, the leading influences eventually being Bob Glück’s writing classes and his efforts as a Spicer biographer, culminating in prose in a book co-authored with Kevin Killian, "Poet Be Like God" in 1995. "The Birds and Other Poems" was published in 2009; new writing continues, now online.

2009Lewis is the Atheist.
Lewis holds Left-liberal political views.
Quotations: “I am unmarried; books are my children. Besides titles produced, I have several unpublished novels and a pair of ongoing reflections of my life. All my work, even the driest genealogy texts, represent my central cultural value: legacy — what we have to offer — dressed as we may choose to dress it. History, politics, thought, nature, and art (focused in ecological concerns) are what drive my effort. The books are an attempt to make my strong mark.”
Lewis Ellingham is still unmarried.
