Lewis M. Simons has been a journalist in Asia since 1967. In 1986 he and two colleagues received the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting and the George Polk Memorial Award for a series of articles exposing the draining of billions of dollars from the Philippines by Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos and their cronies. The Pulitzer board said these articles "had a direct impact on subsequent political developments in the Philippines and the United States." Representative Stephen Solarz wrote, "Your series made history....Few articles have registered so profound and positive an impact upon the course of international events. You helped to set in motion a series of events which resulted in the triumph over tyranny in the Philippines." Simons is currently based in Tokyo as bureau chief for the San Jose Mercury-News/Knight-Ridder Newspapers.
