He received his high school education in the preparatory school of Yale-in-China, Changsha, from which he graduated in 1919. After that Mr. Ho went to America and studied at Pomona College, California, from which he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1922. He also attended the graduate school of economics of Yale University and in 1926 received his Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Ho Lien was a research assistant at Yale in 1925-1926 and served as reader in economics for three years. He returned to China in 1926 and became professor of finance and statistics at Nankai University, Tianjin (Tientsin). In 1927 he organized a committee on social and economical research at Nankai University and became its director. Mr. Ho served for a time as technical adviser to the Bureau of Markets, Shanghai and consulting statistician to the Bureau of Economic Information, Beijing (Peking). He was honorary technical adviser to the Bureau of Statistics of the Legislative Yuan and also special research fellow of the Department of Social Sciences in the National Research Institute.
