Lin Wellford was born as Linda Wellford on July 28, 1951 in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. She is the daughter of Marion and Nancy Clark Wellford.
Lin Wellford studied at the University of Florida where she received an Associate of Arts degree. She became engaged in writing and art during her school years.
Lin Wellford is known as a writer and artist. Many years ago, she moved to the Ozark Mountains of Northwest Arkansas and soon afterward fell in love with the water tumbled rocks that lined the local creek banks. She loved the sizes and shapes and the naturalness of these rocks so much that she began collecting ones that looked like small potatoes and painting them into little wild rabbits. The transformation was magical and soon she was painting all kinds of rock animals.
After many years of painting and selling her rock art, she was encouraged to write a how-to book describing her techniques. That first book, The Art of Painting Animals on Rocks (1994), did so well that she ended up writing a whole line of books on various ways rocks can be used to create unique works of art.
The success of her books lead to guest appearances on a number of nationally televised craft shows, including four segments on The Carol Duvall Show on HGTV. She also taught at national and regional painting conventions and sought out ways to show people of all ages how fun and exciting, not to mention inexpensive, rock painting activity can be. Her work has been published in scores of magazines and newspaper articles over the years, and foreign editions of her books include Italian, Japanese, Korean, Thai, German and others.
Her other books include Painting Houses, Cottages and Towns on Rocks (1996), Painting More Animals on Rocks (1998), Painting Flowers on Rocks (1999), Painting Pets on Rocks (2000), Painting on Rocks for Kids (2002), Rock Painting Fun for Everyone! (2006), Painted Garden Art Anyone Can Do (2009), Rock Painting for Kids: Painting Projects for Rocks of Any Kind You Can Find (2019) and others.
