(Linda Bailey's story will thoroughly entertain pre-reader...)
Linda Bailey's story will thoroughly entertain pre-readers, as it hits the right notes of droll humor spiced with just enough suspense. The lively artwork by Colin Jack keeps the energy level high, and the scenes of the toadlets wreaking havoc on fox's kitchen while he is distracted - rolling in honey, pelting canned peas at each other, parachuting off the cabinet using bread slices - provide a funny visual subplot to the story that will keep youngsters involved. This book would provide a wonderful starting point for conversations about how sometimes the person who seems the strongest isn't the winner in the end, which could tie into a character education lesson on perseverance. It might also launch a discussion about trying new foods, after which the included recipe could be prepared as a classroom activity.

A shy boy comes to life and finds his voice when the ghosts of seven dead pirates appear in his bedroom. A humorous, inspiring adventure with poignancy and depth, destined to become a middle-grade classic! Lewis Dearborn is a lonely, anxious, "terminally shy" boy of eleven when his great-grandfather passes away and leaves Lewis's family with his decaying seaside mansion. Lewis is initially delighted with his new bedroom, a secluded tower in a remote part of the house. Then he discovers that it's already occupied - by the ghosts of seven dead pirates. Worse, the ghosts expect him to help them re-take their ship, now restored and on display in a local museum, so they can make their way to Libertalia, a legendary pirate utopia. The only problem is that this motley crew hasn't left the house in almost two hundred years and is terrified of going outside. As Lewis warily sets out to assist his new roommates - a raucous, unruly bunch who exhibit a strange delight in thrift-store fashions and a thirst for storybooks - he begins to open himself to the possibilities of friendship, passion and joie de vivre and finds the courage to speak up.

(Every day, Stanley the dog watched all the children in hi...)
Every day, Stanley the dog watched all the children in his neighborhood walk down his street and into their school, where they stayed until the afternoon. And every day he got more and more curious. ?What did the kids do in that school all day?? His dog friends at the park didn't know any more than he did. So they decided to find out, and together they made their way to the bottom of the stairs in front of the school. ?And that's when Stanley got an idea. A big idea. A bold idea! An idea so daring, it made his fur stand up. 'Why don't we go inside?' he said.? What could be more fun than four dogs running loose in an elementary school? Not much. Until they get caught, that is! Small children love stories about things in their world getting turned upside down, and this story delivers in a big way. This sixth book in the bestselling series from the multi-award-winning team of Linda Bailey and Bill Slavin will have children roaring with delight, as the dogs are shown in hilarious detail making their way through lunch boxes, chasing basketballs and upending instruments and paint jars before eventually getting marched out by the principal (the ?top dog? at the school). This book is a natural for a lively read-aloud, but it could also spark a discussion about seeing things from another's point of view, in this case a dog's.

2008Quotations: Linda Bailey about the ideas for books: "Ideas are like the dust in the air. Most of the time, you can't see the dust. But when the sun comes through the window, you can see that it was there all along. Ideas are like that. They're floating around everywhere, but you can only "get" them if you really pay attention. Writers are always looking for ideas."
Bailey was a reader and a daydreamer in her childhood. And she is happy about it, considering that reading and daydreaming are fabulous preparation for becoming a writer.
