Brooks obtained an MFA in 1976 and a BFA in painting in 1973, both from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
She has been employed as an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis since 1976. She has also taught at SUNY, Buffalo (1975-76), and at Starpoint Central School in Lockport, New York (1973-75).
She had also joined the College Art Association (1976-78) and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo (1972- 76). She was a recipient of the Minnesota State Art Board Project Grant in 1980.
Brooks worked "primarily from interior sculptural installations or situations which [she sets] up specifically to photograph." She was also involved in "a series of small books of b&w contact prints and Cibachrome prints of sequential images of personal content."
For the past several years, the artist has been a member of SPE, the St. Paul Art Collective in Minnesota, the George Eastman House and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
