Leavell received her early education in Nashville, Tennessee; Louisville, Kentucky; and Waco, Texas. For two years she attended Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. She earned a B.A. in English and philosophy from Baylor University in 1976. Then she earned her M.A. in 1984 and a doctorate in English in 1986 from Rice University.
Leavell began her academic career in 1985 at Rhodes College as a visiting assistant professor of English and then, since 1986, taught American literature at Oklahoma State University for twenty-four years. She retired from her academic career in 2010 and moved with her husband to Fayetteville, Arkansas, where she writes full time and volunteers as an art museum guide.
She has been a member of Modern Language Association of America, American Association of University Professors (president of Oklahoma Conference, 1996-1997), South Central Modern Language Association (member of executive committee, 1996-1998).
Linda married Robert Brooks Garner, on May 21, 1988.
