Jenkins started his career as a ski instructor in Aspen Ski School, Colorado, in 1958-1961. He then went to West Africa and worked as a teacher in Peace Corps, Sierra Leone, in 1961-1963.
In 1964-1965 he was a reporter at Port Chester Daily Item in New York. He then worked as a newsman for United Press International in New York, London, Madrid, and Paris in 1965-1969.
Jenkins became a correspondent and worked for the Newsweek in Madrid, Hong Kong, Beirut, Saigon, and Rome in 1969-1979. He was also a correspondent for The Washington Post in Rome in 1979-1989.
Jenkins became publisher and editor at The Aspen Times and worked there from 1992 to 1995. He was the senior foreign editor at National Public Radio, Washington, from 1995 to 2011. In 2011 he became a writer at LBJ Productions and still works on a series for television.
Jenkins married Nancy Harmon in June 1964; they divorced in 1985. Together they have two children, Sara and Nicholas.
