He was a graduate in architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He continued his training in draftsmanship while employed with the Boston firm of Peabody & Stearns, and in 1896 was successful in winning the coveted Rotch Traveling Scholarship. After two years of travel and study in Europe, Boylston returned to the U. S. and for a few years remained in Boston, working as a draftsman. In 1905 he accepted an invitation to teach at the University of Michigan's School of Architecture, and remained a member of the faculty until the time of his decease. Among the buildings on the Campus which he designed were several Faculty Houses, and the South University School.
A former member and Director of the Ann Arbor Art Association, he was elected president in 1920, and served two years in that office.
