Louis John Stellman was born on January 6, 1877, in Baltimore, Maryland, United States.
Louis Stellman educated at a private school in Baltimore and public schools in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Louis Stellman began work as a telegraph operator in the San Francisco, Los Angeles, Bakersfield, and Mojave (California) areas. He worked as a theatrical press agent in Los Angeles in 1901, then as a reporter for the Herald, the Times, and the Examiner in Los Angeles. In 1902 Louis Stellman went to work for the San Francisco News, first as a reporter, then as an editor and coast manager. He switched to the San Francisco Post in 1909 and later became an editorial writer for the San Francisco Globe.
Louis Stellman wrote many features and pieces of fiction for English and American magazines, and in the early 1940s wrote a weekly column for the Oberlin Times (Ohio). He moved to Carmel in 1947. Louis Stellman served as librarian at San Francisco Press Club in 1904 and 1907-1908.
Stellman's photography served as an accompaniment to his prolific writings on San Francisco. His images provide glimpses of the waterfront, the hills, and odd nooks and corners that only an intimate of the city could know. His Chinatown photographs are among the best collections of their kind.
Stellman belonged to the Padre Trails Camera Club in Carmel and the Writer's Club of London and joined the San Francisco Press Club in 1903.
