Louise E. Katzman was born in 1949 in New York, United States.
Katzman studied in 1969 at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and in 1970 at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. She then earned her BA (1971) from Harpur College, State University of New York at Binghamton and received an MFA in photography (1975) from the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland.
A curatorial assistant at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art since 1977, she previously was assistant director of the World Print Council in San Francisco (1975-77). She served museum internships at the San Francisco office of the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art (1974-75), and at the Richmond Art Center (1973), where she was the curator's assistant. In 1972-73 she was a photographer for the Media Center at the California College of Arts and Crafts.
Katzman has belonged to SPE since 1976.
