Louise Yelin was born on December 2, 1945, in Newark, New Jersey, United States, to Gabriel and Jeanette (Jelling) Yelin.
In 1967, Yelin received a Bachelor of Arts from Bryn Mawr College. She also received a Master of Arts from Columbia University in 1969, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1976.
From 1977 to 1979, Louise Yelin was an assistant professor of English at Hostos Community College of the City University of New York. Then, she taught at Purchase College for 36 years, from 1980 to 2016. In addition to teaching in the literature program in the college’s School of Humanities, she participated in the interdisciplinary gender studies program. From 2008 to 2010, Yelin served as the interim dean of the School of Humanities, and then as chair of the school from 2010 to 2013.
Louise Yelin was the co-curator of Robin Rhode: Animating the Everyday, an exhibition at the Neuberger Museum of Art. She also curated the exhibition British Subjects: Identity and Self-Fashioning 1967–2009 at the Neuberger Museum of Art.
Louise Yelin is best known as an educator and author whose areas of interest include feminism and British fiction and culture. She is the author of From the Margins of Empire: Christina Stead, Doris Lessing, Nadine Gordimer, an analysis of fiction produced by three female colonialists.
During her distinguished career at the college, she was awarded the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1997 and named Doris and Carl Kempner Distinguished Professor for 2006–2008, an honor that accompanies a competitive two-year senior faculty research award.
