Nona Schurman was born on November 6, 1909, in Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada.
From 1929 to 1931 Nona Schurman attended McGill University and Lausanne Conservatory. In 1930 she studied dance with Blanche Evans in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, with Hanya Holm in New York, New York, from 1934 to 1936, and with Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman, at the beginning of 1936.
From 1939 to 1943 Nona Schurman was a member of Humphrey-Weidman Company and a teacher of the dance from 1941 to 1943. From 1939 to 1967 she worked as a teacher of Humphrey-Weidman technique and dance composition at the New Dance Group, a director of Young Concert Dancers Lecture Demonstrations from 1956 to 1964, and served as vice president, board chair, and head of Humphrey-Weidman Department. In 1943 she was an exercise instructor at Elizabeth Arden Studio. From 1943 to 1944 Nona served as a modern dance director at Roxy Theater. From 1954 to 1968 she was a founder and director of the Center for Dance Study.
From 1973 to 1979 Schurman was an assistant professor of dance at the State University of New York College at Geneseo. Nona was professor emeritus at SUNY Geneseo where she received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching with a perfect score. She also taught at New York University (1979), Cornish College (1980), Stephens College, Columbia, (1983), Ohio State University (1994), and at various schools and organizations in the New York area, including the 92nd Street Young Men’s and Young Women's Hebrew Association, from 1946 to 1968.
She was a dancer in stage productions, including the musicals Up in Central Park and Shootin' Stars, and a director and choreographer of stage productions. Nona was a member of the board of directors at the Dance Notation Bureau. Schurman was a co-author of Modern Dance Fundamentals, a technical manual based on Humphrey-Weidman principles.
