In Washington Dixon availed himself of every opportunity to augment his early training and was successful to such a degree that he became a member of the Office of the Supervising Architect. After maintaining that position for twelve years he resigned in 1864, and following the close of the Civil War settled in Chicago where he carried on a practice during his remaining years. Among Mr. Dixon's works in Chicago were public and private buildings, the best known of which were several business blocks. Also he designed the Cook County Asylum for the Insane at Jefferson, Ill.
He was left an orphan at the age of six, the lad was adopted by Ammi Young.
