Tonello served as a lance corporal in Italian Air Force from 1994 to 1995. He began his career as a head of informatics department at Brain Antiageing Research Club in 2000 and had held it for five years. In 2001, he took a position of a lecturer of informatics and automatic systems at State Institute of Higher Education "Primo Levi". Then in 2005, Lucio was appointed a consultant at Villa Maria Foundation, where he served until 2006.
He worked as a head of Lipid Neurosci Group in the Artificial Neural Network Department at Imperial College of London from 2007 to 2009. Since 2009 Lucio has been a professor of bio-mathematics science at the University of Lugano.
Tonello discovered the artificial neural network research and application. He received the grant from the University of Bologna from 2005 to 2007.
Tonello is a member of Italian Society of Experimental Biology and Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers.
