Excerpt from Christliche Antike, Vol. 1: Einführung in die Altchristliche Kunst Dies Buch will eine Einführung sein für alle, welche dem Gegenstande noch nicht näher traten; insbesondere ist dabei an klassische Philologen und Archäologen gedacht. Ob Theologen in dem Buche für sich etwas finden können, müssen sie selbst sehen; jedenfalls haben sachliche Besprechungen von Theologen jeder Konfession auf besonderen Dank zu rechnen. Das Buch ist so geschrieben, da Bes auch von weiteren Kreisen der Gebildeten gelesen werden kann; der gelehrte Apparat wurde in die Fußnoten verwiesen. Die altchristliche Kunst, verstanden als christliche Antike, hat Verfasser 1877 in den Kreis der klassisch-archäologischen Vorlesungen eingeführt und in gleichem Sinne sie 1887 in seinen Grundriß aufgenommen (Weltgeschichte der Kunst im Altertum, 2. verbess Auflage, Marburg 1903). Das dort knapp Skizzierte wird hier ausgeführt und begründet. Das Buch hätte an sieh früher herausgegeben werden können; aber es mußte auf das Erscheinen von Wilperts "Malereien der Katakomben Roms" warten und mußte dann erst auf die neue Grundlage ihrer zuverlässigen Reproduktionen gestellt werden; in der Erklärung aber konnte es sich jetzt wesentlich nur um eine Aus einandersetzung mit Wilperts Textband handeln, sei es in offener Aussprache oder stillschweigend. Von entgegengesetzten Ausgangspunkten herkommend gehen wir doch große strecken zusammen, um an wichtigen Punkten uns dann freilich um so weiter zu trennen. Die Moral der Sache ist: je mehr die 'Weltanschauungen" aus dem Spiele bleiben, desto eher wird man sich verständigen. Seinerseits hat Verfasser gesucht, in einer ersten Einleitung "Glauben und Forschen" für seine Arbeit wie für das ganze geistige Sein auf längst gegründeten Fundamenten eine dein Streit der Weltanschauungen entrückte Position zu gewinnen. Die Farbtafeln sollen eine Vorstellung von der Malweise geben, und zwar der besseren Malereien. Die Textbilder wollen bloß eine Anschauung der wichtigsten Bildtypen vermitteln; der größeren Deutlichkeit zulieb sind sie nur zum Teil der Wilpertschen Publikation entnommen, zum Teil de Rossi's Roma sotterranea und Garrucci's Storia.
