Luella was born on 30th of October, 1861 in Oberlin, Ohio, United States. In 1887 she arrived in China.
She studied at the Oberlin High School and she graduated from Oberlin University.
She was a teacher in North China Union College during 1888-1901. Later during 1905-1919 she was a president of North China Union Women’s College. In 1920 she was appointed the Dean of Women’s College.
