In 1932, Malkin graduated from Herzen State Pedagogical University, the Faculty of Russian Language and Literature. In 1958 became Doctor of Philology.
After the graduation, Viktor Malkin worked as a teacher for a few years. Between 1938 and 1940 Viktor lectured at German State Pedagogical Institute, later at the universities of Krasnoyarsk (1941-1945) and Lviv (1945-1960). Since 1960 he became the head of the Department of Russian Literature at Voronezh State University. From 1966 till 1988 he was a professor in the same department. Lectured at the universities of Seged (Hungary) and Krakov (Poland).
