upercio Leonardo de Argensola (Barbastro (Huesca), 14 de diciembre de 1559 - Nápoles, 1613) fue un poeta, historiador y dramaturgo español. Destaca por su obra poética, de corte clasicista, y por ser uno de los iniciadores del teatro clásico español, adscribiéndose a la escuela renacentista de fines del siglo XVI, con sus dos tragedias conservadas Isabela y Alejandra, escritas en su juventud. Su poesía fue reunida y publicada por su hijo Gabriel junto con las de su hermano, el también poeta, Bartolomé, con el título de Rimas. Cronista del Reino de Aragón, publicó obras sobre las Alteraciones de Zaragoza y continuó la labor de los Anales de la Corona de Aragón, con adiciones a dicha obra, escrita por Jerónimo Zurita. e denominan las Alteraciones de Aragón a los eventos sucedidos en Aragón durante el reinado de Felipe II de España y primero de Aragón. El reino de Aragón permaneció tranquilo durante la primera mitad del siglo XVI, mientras se desarrollaba la Guerra de las Comunidades en Castilla y las Germanías en Valencia, pero la segunda mitad del siglo estuvo marcada por una serie de conflictos que convulsionaron el reino y que culminaron con el enfrentamiento directo entre las instituciones aragonesas y el rey.

Lupercio Leonardo de Argensola was born in Barbastro. He was baptized on the 14th of December 1559. His brohter, Bartolomé Leonardo de Argensola, was a Spanish poet and historian.
He studied Philosophy and Jurisprudence in Huesca and Rhetoric and History in Zaragoza with Andrés Scoto and, after these, he moved to Madrid , where he attended poetry academies.
He became secretary to the duke de Villahermosa in 1585.
He was appointed historiographer of Aragon in 1599, and in 1610 accompanied the count de Lemos to Naples.
His tragedies"Fills", "Isabela" and "Alejandra" are said by Cervantes to have "filled all who heard them with admiration, delight and interest".
Filis is lost, and Isabela and Alejandra, which were not printed till 1772, are imitations of Seneca.
Argensola's poems were published with those of his brother, Bartolomé Leonardo de Argensola, in 1634; they consist of translations from the Latin poets, and of original satires.
He died in March 1613 in Naples.
