(This book is an introduction to, and an exploration in de...)
This book is an introduction to, and an exploration in detail of, major Western value systems. These systems - Marxism, Psychoanalytic Humanism, Existentialism, New Morality, "Death of God" Theology, and Analytic Philosophy - deal with the search for satisfactory value commitments based on insights gleaned from the social sciences, the humanities, philosophy, and religion. The first chapter surveys the moral climate of our century in order to show how the relativism and pragmatism of the early decades of the twentieth century have modified present day moral positions. The body of the book is then concerned with exploring in some detail the leading competing systems of values in the present Western world. In the final chapter the author shows how contemporary analytical philosophy can be relevant to one who is seeking to choose between conflicting ideals of life. Each chapter expounds the basic philosophies of the writers considered and raises central evaluative questions in order to help the reader think through the issues for himself.
