Began practice of law at Covington, Virginia, 1889. Elected by Virginia legislature judge District of Allegheny and Craig companies, 1891, term of 6 years. Appointed after 2 years, by Governor O’Ferrall, to hold court for Augusta Company, and moved to Staunton.
Elected by legislature, 1893, for unexpired term, and resigned judgeship of Allegheny and Craig.
Judge District of Augusta and Highland, 1898-1904. Moved to Lexington, Kentucky.
Appointed dean Kentucky U. (Transylvania), 1895, and revived the law department. Dean Law School, University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, 1907-1910.
Professor of law, University of Kentucky, 1910-1931, professor emeritus, since 1931, dean College of Law, 1923.
