Lynn Curlee was born on October 9, 1947, in High Point, North Carolina, United States.
Curlee attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor’s degree in Art History from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Subsequently, he was awarded a graduate fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he earned a master’s degree in Art History, specializing in nineteenth-century architecture and Italian quattrocento painting.
In 1971, Curlee moved to Manhattan, where he began his career as a professional artist with a debut exhibition at Christopher Gallery on Madison Avenue in 1973. From that time, he has exhibited extensively in New York, particularly at Gallery Henoch in SoHo.
In 1979, he moved to Los Angeles, where he lived for four years, exhibiting at the Dunaway-O’Neill Gallery in Santa Monica. He returned to New York in 1982 and resumed his career at Gallery Henoch. In the late 1980’s he began to spend a great deal of time on the East End of Long Island, where he exhibited at the Elaine Benson Gallery in Bridgehampton. He moved from Manhattan to the North Fork of Long Island in 1992.
At that time, Curlee began to take on some commercial work, completing a series of wine labels for Pindar and Duckwalk vineyards, the largest vineyards in Long Island’s brand new wine industry. He has also done two posters for the Hampton Classic Horse Show, one of the most prestigious equestrian events in the country.
In 1991, Curlee launched a second career when he was invited to illustrate his first book for children in the years since, his work as author-illustrator has become his primary artistic activity. The first few of his award-winning books were published by HarperCollins, Houghton-Mifflin, and Scholastic. Since 2000 his books have been published exclusively by Atheneum Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Simon and Schuster. Recently Curlee has returned to his first love – crafting individual paintings of subjects which interest him.
A fine artist and gallery owner, Lynn Curlee is best known for creating award-winning self-illustrated picture books that focus on the famous landmarks that characterize the landscape. Focusing primarily on North America, Curlee has produced Rushmore, Capital, Skyscraper, Brooklyn Bridge, and Liberty. He also mines world history to produce Seven Wonders of the World, Parthenon, and Mythological Creatures: A Classical Bestiary.
To date, Curlee has published 13 award-winning non-fiction books for older children.
