GUREVICH, Lyubov’ was born on November 1, 1866 in St. Petersburg. Daughter of a teacher.
1888 graduate Philological Department. Besstuzhev Higher Women’s Courses.
While still a student began writing stories and translating. 1891-1898 ed and publisher, journal Severnyy vestnik. Persuaded such eminent writers as L. N. Tolstoy, Chekhov, Leskov and Gorky to contribute to the journal.
Contributed to journals Mir bozhiy, Zhizn’, Obrazovaniye, etc. 1912 published the collection Literatura i estetika (Literature and Aesthetics), which included articles on Gogol’, Pushkin, L. Tolstoy, Chekhov, Leskov and Al’bov and articles on aesthetics with valuable observations on the nature of artistic creative work. From early 1900’s concentrated on history, theater history and theater criticism.
With the opening of the Moscow Arts Theater, became its ardent advocate and friend of K. S. Stanislavskiy. First to edit Stanislavskiy’s theoretical works, including the book Moya zhizn ’ v iskusstve (My Life in Art). After 1917 October Revol active in Soviet theater studies.
Translated Spinoza’s letters, M. K. Bashkirtseva’s Dnevnik, Baudelaire’s "Verse in Prose”, works of Guy de Maupassant, Anatole France and Schnitzler. Edited L. Tolstoy’s letters for the anniversary ed of his works.
