In 1979 M. Melissa Shook became an assistant professor in the Art Department of the University of Massachusetts Harbor Campus in Boston and artist-in-residence for Cornell University's Art Department. From 1974 to 1977 she was a lecturer and assistant professor in the Creative Photo Lab at MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and in 1974 M. Melissa Shook lectured at the New School for Social Research in New York City and at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, New York.
M. Melissa Shook has produced a twelve-year series on her daughter, Krissy, and in the 1980s was photographing charismatic healing services.
