Nashed was born on May 14, 1936 in Aleppo, Syria; the son of Zaki Nashed and Nabiha Mosalati.
Nashed received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1957. A year later he earned his Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the same university. In 1963, Zuhair received a Master of Science degree and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan.
Nashed began his career as an assistant professor at Georgia Institute of Technology in 1963. Two years later he took a position of an associate professor at that institute. Then in 1969, Zuhair became a professor at Georgia Institute of Technology. In 1977, he was appointed a professor of mathematics and electrical engineering at the University of Delaware.
Zuhair served as a professor and chairman of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Central Florida from 2002 to 2006. Since 2007 Nashed has been a professor emeritus at that university. He was a visiting associate at American University of Beirut.
He is the founding editor of the journal "Numerical Functional Analysis and Optimization" and the founding co-editor of the Journal of Integral Equations and Applications.
