Leons was born on August 27, 1938 in New York City, New York, United States; the daughter of Irving Abraham Levine and Rosalind (Siff) Levine.
Leons received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brandeis University in 1959. Four years later she earned his Master of Arts degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1967 from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Leons began her career as an instructor at the University of Southern California in 1965. A year later she took a position of an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh. Since 1970 Madeline has served as a professor of the department of anthropology at Towson State University.
