Byrne earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Language & Literature from University College, Dublin, in 1977. She was awarded a Higher Diploma in from Trinity College, Dublin in 1994, before earning a Master of Arts in Literature and Creative Writing (in 1996) and a Doctor of Philosophy in Theory & Cultural Studies (in 2001), both from Purdue University.
