Joined Government Service 1940, Cultivation Officer 1940-1947. Member of Parliament 1947-1989. Minister of Transport and Works 1956-1959.

Minister of Industries, Home Affairs and Cultural Affairs 63.

Minister of Commerce and Industries 1963-1964, of Rural and Industrial Development 1964-1965, of Irrigation. Power and Highways 1970-1977.

Leader of the House of Reps, (later National State Assembly) 1970-1977. Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Deputy Leader -December 1981.
