Background
Maksim Evgrafovich was born on August 30, 1903 in a noble family. He was the son of Evgraf Petrovich Kovalevsky, brother of Peter Evgrafovich Kovalevsky and Evgraf Evgrafovich Kovalevsky. As a child, he lived in his parents' estate (village Yutanovka, Biryuchensky district, Voronezh province).
Education
In 1920 he emigrated from Russia along with his family. Maksim Evgrafovich studied in the Corps of Pages (Saint Petersburg). He graduated from the University of Mathematics and Conservatory in Paris.
Career
Maksim Evgrafovich served in the Orthodox churches of Nice and Paris. Together with his brother Bishop John (Kovalevsky), he worked a lot in France to get acquainted with the Orthodox faith and culture. He was the chairman of the Russian Musical Society in France, regent of the Church of St. Irenaeus in Paris (1949). He taught the history of church singing. Author of musicological articles in Russian and French periodicals.
Membership
Together with V.N. Lossky, L.A. Ouspensky and others they were members of the Orthodox fraternity of the holy patriarch Photius in Paris (1925-40s).
